The Part Both Options Share
Diamonds do not go from source to finger unaided. They are cut, polished, sorted and set, and jewellery is manufactured — and labour conditions in those stages apply regardless of whether a stone was grown or mined.
This part of the supply chain gets far less attention than mining does, but it is where a large share of the human work in a piece of jewellery actually happens. A buyer who cares about labour conditions should be asking about manufacturing as well as about the stone.
The metal is a further consideration that often goes unmentioned. Gold mining carries its own significant environmental and human impacts, and a lab grown diamond set in newly mined gold has only addressed part of the question. Recycled metal is a meaningful option where a maker offers it.
What About the Kimberley Process?
The Kimberley Process is the international certification scheme intended to prevent conflict diamonds entering the legitimate trade. It has had real effects, and it is also narrower than many buyers assume.
Its definition of a conflict diamond centres on rough diamonds used by rebel movements to finance war against legitimate governments. It does not, by design, address labour conditions, environmental damage, or abuses associated with state actors. A stone can be fully Kimberley-compliant and still raise concerns a buyer would care about.
This is not an argument against mined diamonds. It is an argument against treating any single certification as a complete answer to a question that has several parts.

The practical move is to replace general claims with specific questions, and to weigh how directly they are answered.
- Where was this stone produced, and can you name the facility or region?
- What growth method was used, and was there post-growth treatment?
- Where was the stone cut and polished?
- Where is the jewellery manufactured, and what do you know about conditions there?
- Is recycled metal available as an option?
- For any environmental claim you make, what is it based on, and is it independently certified?
A seller who answers directly, including saying “we do not know” where that is the truth, is giving you more usable information than one who answers with adjectives.
